Last month Hands of The Carpenter had the pleasure of meeting Carmen as a result of a referral from a pizza delivery man.
Carmen is a single mom of nine children. Six of them, ages 5—17 are living with her right now. She home schools her children. Carmen has been battling cancer, diabetes and liver failure for the past few years. In the midst of that, her husband left them last year.
Her home was built in 1911 and needs many repairs. The only functioning bathroom has mold covered walls, sunken flooring and several rolls of duct tape holding up the shower walls. Windows in her children’s rooms are all either missing glass, won’t close or the wood frame has rotted. There are no working electrical outlets in her kitchen and the glass is broken in the front and back door.
This month, with the help of some businesses and individual volunteers,
HoTC has the pleasure of serving Carmen and being a small light of hope in her fight to care for her children by providing a safe home while she continues to fight bigger battles.
